Waiting

Earlier this winter I came across a song by what appeared to be a coincidence. It was recommended on YouTube and ever since I heard it, it has resounded in my heart and I have found myself singing it or longing to hear it at various times since I first heard it. The song I refer to is I Will Wait For You (Psalm 130) written by Keith Getty, Jordan Kauflin, Matt Merker and Stuart Townend. You can listen to the choral version at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21A7GLtGgDs and see the full lyrics at https://www.gettymusic.com/iwillwait

The whole song contains strong biblical truths from Psalm 130, but the chorus itself pulls me in every single time.

I will wait for You

I will wait for You

On Your word, I will rely

I will wait for You

Surely wait for You

Till my soul is satisfied

This song also reminds me of my favourite Bible story in 1 Kings 19. Elijah has just seen God work in amazing ways through provision of food in the midst of a drought, a dead boy is raised to life, and the power of God over idols is proven in miraculous ways. But there is no rest when the priests of Baal are destroyed. Elijah instead flees for his life and hides in a mountain cave waiting to die. Instead of bringing death, God speaks to Elijah through an unexpected way. After the intensity of his previous experiences, God speaks to Elijah in a low whisper. Elijah then leaves the mountain to continue serving God.

I identify with Elijah’s all or nothing mindset. I tend to run hard and focused at a specific task until I crash. The crash often results in exhaustion, frustration, and a lack of motivation. I fight against this natural inclination in my character, but Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 and the song are important reminders. My focus is my problem more than anything. I need to rely on God’s word to direct me in my everyday life. When I get focused on myself alone those are the times that I struggle the most.

I don’t know where you are at, but I am guessing that our current situation may have led to some frustration and taken more focus than it should. I hope that this song and Psalm 130 can be a reminder to you. That it can help you reposition your focus. Let this be our prayer that God will help us to rely on His Word alone as we wait. Because our wait will not be over, and our souls will not be truly satisfied until we sit at the feet of Jesus in heaven.
