I realize not everyone is a reader, and so that title will make some of you very excited and
others will wonder what all the fuss is about. However, the book I’m talking about is one that
has an important message and some important truths for us to consider in the midst of the
coronavirus threat – Coronavirus and Christ by John Piper. Whether you’re an avid reader or
not, this book is worth looking into.
John Piper has written many books in his time and I have read some – not nearly all – of them.
He writes with passion and a good Biblical foundation. This specific book has just been written
and released. While it is a short book, it gives a good perspective on the sovereignty of God
in the midst of this pandemic. The first half of the book reminds us of who our God is – our
foundation, our rock, our King, Holy, Righteous, and Good. Piper reminds us that these things
all interlock and intermingle with each other and never contradict each other as God is at work. Piper then shows that it is better that we see God as sovereign and in control. Our heavenly Father has a plan, and that that plan is good, even if it brings
hardship.
The second half of the book offers six answers for what God is doing in this pandemic. Piper is
clear that he doesn’t presume to know all of the answers about what God is doing, but drawing
from Biblical examples, he gives six thing for us to consider, things God has used suffering to
accomplish before.
I believe that this book is worth your time to read and listen to, and to make it more accessible,
it is available at no cost – in multiple electronic formats as well as an Audiobook. They can be
